I Love Linen Closets

I love linen closets. I vividly remember the linen closet in my childhood home. It was in the upstairs  hall and had many shelves. A lovely aroma escaped when the door was opened.  I loved how all the towels and sheets were perfectly folded and piled on top of each other. My current home is nearly 100 years old and has only three closets. Needless to say, I can not spare one whole closet for linens. But that is what dreaming if for, right?

This closet is before my time but it still reminds me of my Mom's closet. I love how the towels and sheets are tied with a ribbon. So pretty. Check out the sliding drawers on the bottom.

While doing research for this post I found it difficult to find any real history of the linen closet. I did however find some history in paintings. In 1661 Dutch artist, Pieter de Hooch, painted "a Woman With Her Maid." After the artist had children the theme of his paintings revolved around domestic lines. It is safe to say that linens were important in the 1660s based on the care taken in this painting. The stand alone "linen closet" is quite impressive.

In 1906 the linen closet returns in art once again.  The artist, Carl Larsson, one of my favorite painters, choose to paint his wife Karin by their linen cupboard.

The oldest photo I was able to locate was on the NYC Museum web site.

Museum of the City of New York

In 1925, this upscale NYC apartment had shelf liners to enhance the linen closet. Notice all the linen is tied with ribbon.

My perfect linen closet would house  Bella Notte bedding

                                               in several different colors

and styles. They would be folded with perfection
and tied with a pretty ribbon......

and placed next to my towels

                                 and handmade blankets ......

and carefully placed between shelf dividers.

How about really doing it right and have breathable shelves to prevent moisture build up. These shelves are said to be made of rope. This incredible closet is from a Frank Lloyd Wright house.

In my linen closet, beautiful shelf liners and edging would be an essential.

                                                                   Martha Stewart

Vintage lace will work fine for the liner and edging and shades of pink only helps.

I would love to showcase some pretty vintage linens tied with lace.

For my perfect linen closet, cedar walls are required. Not only would there be shelf edging added to the closet but tags would be placed as well to keep everything organized.

                                                              Country Living Magazine

The last requirement in my dream linen closet would be the placement of several lavender sachets.  Each night while lying on the newly changed linen the sweet and calming scent would gently induce you into the most peaceful nights sleep.

Hope you enjoyed your visit.

When I look at all these tidy cupboards and think of mine...
I just get what I need from them and close the door quickly before every thing falls out.
I think spring cleaning comes to mind. Thanks for reminding me.

ohhhhh. i love this post. i just got my FIRST grown up linen closet in this house. Except the for some reason the previous owner had taken all the shelves OUT prior to selling us the house. So hubs crafted some more for me and painted the inside a beautiful sky blue. It makes me think of the beach every time i open it.

What lovely pics! I too live in a home that is nearly 100 years old and yes, very little closet space ~ so I'm always looking for creative ways to find storage. I like your banner and am happy to have found your blog. I am your newest follower. Stop by and see me when you have a chance.

Beautiful Post Careyann,
I think that a linen armoire is a gorgeous thing, ESPECIALLY if you have the room. It's what they had SO MANY YEARS AGO. To get you started you could pick one up at Home Goods for a dance...and then if you wanted an antique one to replace it you would have time to WAIT for the PERFECT ONE to come along. Keep you eyes on goodwill. The other day it was ARMOIRE Heaven in one of mine AND one was cedar lined. They would take a little TLC to refinish the outside BUT they were all very unique(and they were all marked $20dollars).I don't know WHY they had so many all at the same time. I've saved your picture of the woman and her maid, DO YOU SEE the staircase to the right? I'm collecting staircase pictures like that BECAUSE I'm installing one of those in one of my spare rooms and you don't see many photos like that. I saw it called a "Paris Staircase", SO could this picture be Paris?
Thank you so much for this wonderful post, NOW let me go look at MY linens, hehe. Oh YES, LOTS and LOTS of lavender!!!
Hugs to you,
Donna

I love linen closets too wish i had a bigger one My linens have to share space with bathroom stuff like soaps and cleaning yuck. I think a long time ago people put most of linens in a linen press or armoire. Tying them with ribbons is fun to do.
Of course my linens are mainly pink!

What a neat post! I feel so inspired now to go make the most of my own linen closet! :-) It seems like we forget that just because these spaces are behind closed doors, doesn't mean we should still get enjoyment from them when we open those doors up. Thank you so much for linking this up to Inspiration Friday this week and I'm now a new follower! :-)

Our turn of the century cottage came with a wonderful built in linen cupboard in the upstairs hall...I fell in love with it the moment I rounded the corner of the stairs and saw it....I think the cupboard is what sold me on the house for we have had to do a lot of work on this cozy little cottage!

What's a linen closet? Our old house doesn't have one! But I've dreamed of one too, and it would have alot of the elements you've shown. And it would be BIG. Just like my dream pantry. Yes, we have no pantry either!

Happy Pink Saturday Carey Ann Sweetie...
What a gorgeous share. I only wish my linen closet looked half as elegant. I don't think they make them big enough now a days for much storage at all. Mine is so tall, I can't see what is on the top shelf, so I like the idea of the little lace pieces hanging down to frame each shelf. I have several dresser doilies I may play with this weekend. Now if I tied things up with ribbons, I would be losing my ribbons quickly, as someone is always looking for another towel, pillowcase or sheet and they would be untying and tossing along the way.

A girl can dream though right? I love the smell of lavender. It is perfect to dream on.

Hope you have a wonderful weekend. Many hugs and much love, Sherry

Oh to have a full linen closet. I had one and then realized I needed more space for my excess pantry items!! So now, sheets are in the closet of each room they belong, towels are in the bathroom closet along with medicine, toiletries, etc. Not as pretty as the pictures you found!!
